Inside Our Crude Distillation Process

Crude distillation is the first processing step at our refinery, and the foundation for everything we produce afterward. Crude oil arrives, is sampled and staged, then fed into a distillation column where it is heated and separated into fractions according to their boiling points.

How the column separates crude

Lighter fractions rise toward the top of the column, while heavier fractions are drawn off further down. Each fraction becomes the feedstock for a different part of the process. Some go on to secondary processing units, where they are converted into diesel, gasoline and other finished fuels.

The unit runs continuously under monitored temperature and pressure conditions. Operators track performance around the clock, watching for any deviation from the designed operating parameters so it can be corrected quickly.

Quality control starts at the distillation column, not at the end of the process.

The first quality checkpoint

Samples are taken at multiple points and sent to our laboratory, where they are checked against specification before the resulting fractions are approved to move forward. This is the first of several checkpoints a batch passes through before it becomes a finished, dispatch-ready product.

Where each fraction goes

Lighter fractions typically move toward products like gasoline and LPG, middle fractions toward diesel and kerosene, and heavier fractions toward fuel oil and bitumen. Distillation does not finish the job on its own. It sets up the feedstock that secondary processing and blending turn into a finished, sellable product.

Why this stage matters

Problems here compound downstream. A column that is not running within its designed parameters produces fractions that are harder to process correctly later, which is why our operators treat consistent, monitored operation of this unit as a priority rather than a formality.
